Rwanda offers one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences in the world—witnessing mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. This unique and rare opportunity to see these incredible creatures in the wild is truly unforgettable, with many describing the experience as life-changing. With the guidance of expert trackers, small groups of visitors are taken on hikes through forested slopes, where they can spend a precious hour observing the gorillas in their daily routines.

At present, there are over 1,060 mountain gorillas in the wild, with more than 600 living in the Virunga Volcanoes region. Gorilla tracking in Rwanda is both safe and easily accessible, with 23 groups living within and around Volcanoes National Park, 12 of which are fully habituated to human visits.

Primarily terrestrial and quadrupedal, mountain gorillas can also climb trees if they are strong enough to support their weight. Like all great apes (aside from humans), their arms are longer than their legs, and they move by knuckle-walking, using their curved fingers rather than their palms to support their weight.

Mountain gorillas are diurnal, spending most of the day foraging to support their large bodies. They forage in the early morning, rest during late morning and midday, and forage again in the afternoon before resting for the night. Every evening, they build a new nest from surrounding plants to sleep in.
