Since the fourth century, Chinese art has told stories
combining painting, poetry and calligraphy.
Taking small segments of poems, Justin is
blending these into his portrait photographs
to establish a more intricate image that evokes
the moods and spirit of Chinese historic art.
Although portraiture in Chinese art would come
much later, the use of calligraphy always played
a major role. By moving the calligraphy into the
negative space of his frame, Justin balances his
compositions and relaxes the power of the portraits
to bring a more sensual response.
